During the pandemic, when musicians have been sidelined and struggling to navigate a changed industry, pianist Frederick Moyer has continued to perform for audiences throughout the US — without leaving his home. “Moyer On Air” videos combine high-quality audio, a Steinway concert grand, multiple cameras and a patented device to display the hands and images on the underside of the lid of the piano. Moyer’s USolo software allows him to play concertos with orchestra, jazz with bass and drums, chamber music with colleagues around the world. Software engineer Gabe Johnson has developed software that has made it possible to create over 200 videos, each customized for the recipient. Moyer personally greets that audience; images of the organizations’s logo and photos of venue are displayed throughout.
All art is created within restrictions, whether they are the confines of a canvas, the size of the hands playing an instrument, or the metric rules of a poem. Moyer’s video-concerts are themselves a work of art created from the unusual restrictions presented by the pandemic.
